Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
