Each time a significant honors show approaches, one notices a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
